What the appointment covers
The details that can change a surgical plan.
The visit is tailored to the planned procedure and the patient’s health. When outside records or additional testing are needed, the office identifies them before the day of care whenever possible.
Medication plan
Prescription medicines, anticoagulants, diabetes medicines, weight-loss medicines, supplements, and which prescriber should be involved in changes.
Anesthesia considerations
Airway history, sleep apnea, cardiopulmonary risk, nausea, pain-control needs, and the level of monitoring appropriate for the procedure.
Testing and records
Available laboratory results, imaging, cardiac or pulmonary information, consultation notes, and any additional evaluation needed before proceeding.
Care setting
Whether the procedure belongs in our office, at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, or at another appropriate facility based on the procedure, health history, and recovery needs.
Day-of and recovery plan
Arrival instructions, fasting, transportation, support at home, expected recovery, warning signs, and follow-up.
Bring to the appointment
Arrive with the information used to make decisions.
- Current medication and allergy list, including supplements.
- Names of specialists and the location of recent testing.
- Prior anesthesia or airway concerns.
- The planned procedure and surgeon’s instructions, if already available.
- Questions about fasting, medications, transportation, and recovery.
Important
Do not change prescribed medication on your own.
Some changes require a conversation with the clinician who prescribed the medication. Keep taking it as directed unless the clinical office responsible for your procedure tells you otherwise.
New chest pain, severe shortness of breath, signs of stroke, uncontrolled bleeding, or another emergency requires immediate evaluation. Call 911.
